it was as very slim carbon copy paper I thought it was just a layer of insulation but it was folded up. may '82 someone bought a Ross Flanger and Boss CE-2 for $250 total, so these things were always pretty expensive!
That was the good old "list price" era of gear where buying most gear was like buying cars where you haggled on everything.

If people lived in small areas with just a couple of mom & pop shops they would usually end up having to pay closer to list price on everything. I remember in 1994, list price on most boss pedals were either $97.50 or $147.50. So a DS-1 had a $97.50 list price but would usually sell for more like $40-50.

The only pedal that I distinctly remember the price is when I ordered a DF2 from Musician's Friend. This was in 1985, and MF was a newsprint catalog from their home base in Oregon. I was going to get a DS1 for $50, but saw the DF2 for $55.

All of the other BOSS pedals I got around late 83/early 84, and the prices are hard to remember, as I bought most of them at one time and part of the price was covered by my parents as an Xmas gift. I covered $200 of it, earned by the previous summer of lawn mowing and selling off my MXR D+ ($20) and Phase 45 ($30) to friends.
I think the PSM5 was just under $100, but gifted to me from the store owner for some work I did around the store. The BCB6 case was about $100, the TU12H was $65ish?, the CE3 and BF2 were certainly somewhere in the low $100s, and the recently released DD2 was about $200ish.

An SD1 was bought used from a friend for $20 in 1985, I do remember that clearly, as a new one was also about $50.

I'm pretty good at remembering prices over time, but I didn't start playing until 1994. I remember the TU-12H was $99.99 at places like MF.
The DD-2 had a list price of $399, but I don't know what it actually transacted at. Part of why I remember list prices is because I would buy the gear buyer's guide magazines each year and because a store near me often had sales on pedals that were a percentage off list price. Day after X-mas Boss and Ibanez would be 50% off list and DOD would be 60% off list. I was mostly doing DOD at the time since 60% off list made them $20-30 cheaper per pedal than Boss at 50% off. Aside from that sale, I was often just hunting for used pedals.

I believe in 1994-96 the DS-1 was $39 or $49 at MF, but I also remember that at first the SD-1 was quite a bit more relatively, but by 1996 it was usually $10 more than the DS-1. The DOD Supra Distortion was a big DS-1 competitor and was consistently $10 cheaper.

I have a quite bashed-up DF-2 incoming! Fingers crossed that it is Made in Japan. There was only this single picture at ebay. It is missing two knobs and the previous owner wrote FÄRZÄRRÄR on it, which is a malapropism of the German word for "distortion" (Verzerrer).

At least it was the cheapest DF-2 that I've seen in a while: under 70 EUR including shipping.

Meh. Made in Taiwan. I had one of these and it was noisy. Well, maybe I used the wrong power supply back then. Pictures will follow.

Still. Sounds like a good deal, and should clean up OK.

So far this DF-2 sounds good. It looks gruesome in the current state (pictures below). Right now I have no time to clean it (since May I have been renovating two rooms for our children), but I'm going to do that soon. Hopefully I can get rid of the marker traces without destroying the original labelling.

Years ago there were shops at ebay that offered unoriginal but quite good looking BOSS style knobs. I have bought a set of five back then. Where have they gone? I can only find original knobs that cost a fortune! :| That's why I looked for other knurled push-on knobs at Banzai Music. The only ones that I like and that might look good are these mock-ups of the black BOSS VB-2 (BF-2, CE-3) knobs:

Those knobs are OK.
If I had a 3D printer ...
