What?!!! MXR MX100 Rockman?

Post by bigtone23 » Wed Jan 08, 2025 7:37 am

Saw this manual for the MXR MX100, really get the G.A.S. flowing.
Never mind that I have the Sustainor 200 and Stereo Chorus Rockmodules (and 3 button footswitch), which will do everything this pedal will, except fit in a pedalboard! haha.

These 19” rack units bring back a few good old memories of the days when studios were full of these things !

The new MXR pedal sounds very interesting. Thanks for sharing the manual.

There is a company in Japan named GOAT who have released a whole series of "blue" pedals based on the Rockman's.

Here is the link:

The GOATs are the only other hardware-based "Rockman stuff not make by Rockman" out there. They seem really cool and well made. They certainly have all of the controls present!

I was wondering what the white piece of kit behind your rack units was until I zoomed in and read the dials

Looks like there was a page on Dunlop's site for this but it's now returning a 404 error:

I believe PastFX also were intending to do the design too, not sure if they will carry on with it given the MXR is coming though.

Haha! Analog washing machine!

Here's my Rockman rig...
The footswitch is for
1. Switching between my two modes (usually Clean and Edge)
2. Rhythm Volume
3. Chorus Bypass.
The extra footswitch is for the Effectron bypass. It's funny, bypass had to be wired for ring to ground, not tip to ground. Tip to ground is for infinite repeat, which I don't need.

Got one!
Of course, got out the small mixer, ABY box and headphones and compared it directly to my Sustainor 200 and Stereo Chorus Rockmodules.
The vibe is there, in spades.
The MX100 is smoother, more refined. Not sure how much of that is baked in vs my modules being 35 years old and still fully stock.
The MX100 seems to be voiced to be ran in front of a typical guitar amp. The modules have more low end and slightly less mids. When the lows were boosted (about 8-10dB @ 80Hz), the pedal sounded closer to the modules. This is good if you have it on your pedalboard and need to access the clean or dirty Rockman tones for a song or two in your set.

The most noticeable difference is Clean 2 is not nearly as chimey/bright as the original Rockman products. The other 3 modes are close enough for RnR!

Any type of momentary switch works for scrolling through the modes.

Also, going inside, flipping the switch to "stereo" mode, turning up the output volume and plugging headphones into the output jack does result in a cursory, though anemic, headphone amp. Clearly, the impedance and output is not ideal with headphones, but it does work.

As it turns out, demand is nuts for these. There has been many that have sold for $250-300 on the 'scalper' market.
I get it. It does a thing, and does it well in a format many prefer.
