Well, they were sold as broken - for repair. Both paper label, ACA MIJ.
Powered them with a 9V battery and apart form scratchy pots and jacks and a few other issues, both work just fine.
I have a set of knobs for the DF-2 in the parts bin. All they need is a clean and the regular maintenance.
USD$35 for both. I have wanted a DF-2 since I repaired visserman's DF-2 a few months ago. And I need another flanger. I am stoked!
Oh. Bugger. I am back on the slippery slope of Boss collecting

Wow, congrats. Great deal!
I wonder why the seller thought they were broken? Were the batteries dead?

Awesome deal!
Had I known that I had thrown four orange knobs in your parcel, Laurie. At least I think I have some of them in my box with original BOSS replacement parts.
I grabbed an MIJ BF-2 in similar condition last year in combination with a cheap MIJ HM-2. Sold the HM-2 for profit, kept the "free" BF-2.
I have had three DF-2s in the past (2 MIJ, 1 MIT) and I always missed the funny feedback function after selling them.

The DF-2 battery clip wouldn't hold the battery terminals.
The glide bushing on the BF-2 had disintegrated and "glued" the treadle to the body - the treadle wouldn't move.
It looks like all the problems are mechanical.

Thanks for the thought! I actually have a set in the parts bin from back in the day when I had the big Boss collection... serendipity!

Fully dismantled them both.
There is a little bit of corrosion on some of the metal parts, but I've seen worse. Easy to clean off then a bit of clear-coat to stop recurrence.
They stink of cigarette smoke, but a good cleaning will fix that.
The sponge is missing from under the treadle on the DF-2.
Treadle switches are intermittent, but that's an easy fix.
A few things need to be physically adjusted - the "fingers" on the battery snaps, one of the pot shafts on the DF-2, the treadle spring on the BF-2.
The glide-bushings are toast, as expected.
Everything else looks fine.

Great! Could baking soda be an option to get rid of the cigarette smell? I think that every BOSS BF-2 has a really bad smell and I reduced it by putting the pedal in a paper bag with a few spoons of "active sodium bicarbonate" for some days.

Score!
I love it when the issues are simple, mechanical ones.

Cool, you really had the orange knobs at hand.
I just had my own new (broken) pedal day:
My sister-in-law visited us today. She picked up an Alesis Mod-FX "Philtre" for me a few days ago. The seller sold it for a VERY low price, because it didn't work with his power supply. I saw in the photos that he used a weak DC power supply. I plugged in my original Alesis AC power supply and it works like a charm. It's a great unit, it is considered to be one of the best of that series, along with the "Bitrman" that I also own. Pics to follow.
