NPD Boss CE-2 Japan (unusual serial/batch number?)

Post by KozumaHeiji » Tue Oct 20, 2026 5:45 pm

Just joined! I've just traded my trusty CE-2W Waza for this old MIJ Boss CE-2.

I've borrowed this pedal to test before and I am pretty sure it had a black label. Unfortunately I pulled the velcro this time and the label seems to be gone.

I opened it up and the sticker with the serial is there, but curiously it has only 5 digits when I expected to see 6 numbers. See pics. Serial is 50900. i tried to see if any digit was faded or cut, but doesn't seem to be the case. It does say Japan though. I looked it up, but found no info on this. Any experts? Could it be that the leading 0 was ommited, making it 050900? Would that make it 1981?

More tidbits, I also remember it had a mod sticker from a local tech indicating a mod which is now also gone, I think it was the power supply from ACA to PSA, the PSA mod sticker is still there.

Regarding flexibility and sound I loved the Waza, so not sure if it was the best decision, but I always wanted one of these old ones just because I'm a bit of a collector, so I figured I could just go and buy another Waza later on if I wanted to.

Welcome to the forum! 8-)

That looks indeed unusual! I have two pedals with a serial number below 100000, a PH-1 (065200) and a BF-2 (079300), but in both cases there is a "0" in front of the other five digits.

Thx!
Yeah I'm still a bit puzzled

It's a little beat up but it sounds great though!

Welcome to the forum :)

And a nice score. I too remember my first CE-2 vintage moment, it led to a lot of inspiration, a truly magical pedal. Enjoy your new score!

Read that immediatly as a faded "1". 150900.

Which would indicate Febraruy 1982, which fits in the date range of the CE-2 release.

Thanks!

Yeah, I was a bit skeptical but more people seem to be reading that same faded 1. My eyesight is not that great so I didn't want to read a number that wasn't there, but yeah 1982 does make a lot of sense.
