I'm slowly working through the amp sorting out issues.
One symptom was that it would work at full volume for a while, then there would be a loud "pop" through the speaker and the volume would be much reduced and lots more distortion.
This fault (there are other issues I'm chasing, but this one had a specific cause) was a failed phase-splitter tube. As it heated up something inside it was affected by the heat.
I'm certain this is the original tube from when the amplifier was made. See if you can guess why...

Ah, I didn't see that at first look. How very strange! GDR components in an American amp?!
