Boss MZ-2 Digital Metalizer info & effect order

Post by Tecno_165 » Sat Mar 15, 2025 2:34 pm

Hello! I'm looking for some information on the order of the effects in the MZ-2 and the distortion.

Is the delay and modulation happening before or after the gain stages? I want to know for my signal chain.

What dirt pedal does it most resemble? I've heard the DS-2, OD-2 and even HM-2 or none at all. Is it possible to mod it to change the amount of clipping or type?

Welcome to the forum!

The order is analogue distortion, then digital delay/chorus. The latter can be deactivated for pure distortion mode.

The MZ-2 has a distortion sound that cannot be compared to the other analogue BOSS dirt pedals. HM-2 and OD-2 are totally different, DS-2 as well, although the Turbo mode might come a bit close to the MZ-2. The sound of the MZ-2 is quite harsh, metallic, "modern".

Thank you! That's helpful.

if I remember correctly the MZ-2's distortion is discrete 2 transistors, the schematic appears like it should be a fuzz but I've played it and it is in fact a tight edgy distortion. I don't think it would be a great candidate for mods for this reason but the stock sound doesn't disappoint! I don't remember if it is capable of the deep bass EQ that all the other metal type pedals have though.
