I received this unit three days ago. I was not only lucky that this pedal survived the improper packaging of the seller - who put it in an amazon cardboard mailers with just a little extra padding, without taping the flaps, so it wasn't secured from falling out, and I could literally just pull the pedal out from the side! I was also lucky that he obviously wasn't aware that this Japanese DS-2 from Feb 1988 (a very early unit!) is much more worth than the 52 EUR including shipping. I have seen battered Malaysian and Taiwanese pedals go for more than that. Somehow the prices for used DS-2 pedals have gone through the roof in the last few years.

The pedal arrived in very dirty shape and, as expected, the potentiometers were crackling like crazy. But it works like a charm, now. I haven't known the fact that the DS-2 came with a silver label and PSA power supply specification right from the start. The board looks very clean, as if it was a unit manufactured 20 years later. I don't regret this deal at all - despite the fact that I don't exactly love the sound of it. It's a good one, but not really one of my favourites. But at that price, it's a keeper!

I like how the DS-2 had DS-2 colored capacitors. Very cool! I am hoping to happen upon one!

Haha, that's right! And I was surprised to see a completely discrete board without ICs - instead with 23 transistors! I have had a Taiwanese DS-2 at some point, and I don't notice a different sound. This early Japanese model is just how I remember it. If there is a difference in sound, it's not as obvious as that of an MIJ CS-3 with the dbx chip in comparison to all the later mediocre (to say it politely) sounding models.

I don't think I've seen a silver "Made in Japan" logo sticker before? I feel like I am having a brain melt, were there many?

That DS2 is most certainly a unicorn! Was not aware it's a discrete design.

Quite a surprise, right? And I bet that modern SMD versions sound pretty much the same, because no special ICs have been used. That might also explain why it is still in the BOSS product line-up.
