I didn't pay much attention when this pedal was introduced: Was it in high demand and hard to find during it's production, or simply a sleeper pedal that gained attention later? Did a famous guitarist make it more popular?

Oh, you really missed a lot! BOSS didn't make lots of friends with this certain pedal.

It was a limited edition pedal, which is ok but they let dealers take bucket loads of orders that, subsequently, could not be fulfilled. They should have managed it differently and told each dealer how many they would have to sell and not to take additional orders. Of course, the dealers would probably have ignored that anyway ! Overall, it was a shambles and scalpers were onto it in an instance despite Boss stating that they didn’t want that to happen !

I wasn’t happy, in fact I was downright angry !
