It is the Johnson EAD-2 Analogue Delay pedal. It has been modified and rehoused by Pepe. He added a second switch that allows the trails to continue when it's bypassed. Another modification is the separate effect and clean signal level controls. That is very helpful, and even more so when using effect loops that are parallel. I believe he also added true bypass. Additional work was done on the inside that I'm sure Pepe can give a more detailed run down of the mods.

This is my first analogue delay pedal. It is a great pedal, or Pepe's mods made it better. Compared to the reviews the original pedal get I can only assume he turned a almost useless pedal into one of my favorites. I decided to compare it and to my surprise the Ibanez DE-7's analogue simulator mode comes close to replicating the true analogue sound. The Johnson pedal does have more warmth, but it could be the mid hump giving it that sound. Either way it this pedal is perfect for thickening up a solo. It has an 80's vibe to, which is perfect for my shredding.

I'm so glad that you really like the pedal. The original Johnson EAD-2 is such a useless piece of gear. Normally it looks like this:



We had one of these units for sale in the small shop where I used to work. I didn't really like it back then and bought one last year to see what I think about it now. It's useless!

It needs a buffered pedal in front of it or it will ruin your clean tone due to a horrible bypass circuit. And even with a buffered pedal in front of it the bypassed sound is coloured in a bad way. If you take a standard power supply or a fresh battery the effect sound will distort, but it offers high feedback rates and self-oscillation. With a voltage a bit below 9V the delay sounds good, but the feedback rate is low. Plus the volume of the delay and clean sound can only be controlled with a single potentiometer that doesn't offer good sounding results.

So I modified the pedal and now it has a true bypass switch (on the left). The delay effect still needs a buffered pedal in front of it to work properly, though. A voltage regulator ensures that the pedal receives less than 9V with a standard power supply. This way the distortion of the analogue delay effect is moderate. I replaced a resistor to enhance the feedback rate. Now the delay can self-oscillate like crazy. Two separate controls for effect and clean volume are simply better to achieve the right sound. The right footswitch enables echo trails when bypass is selected. It works at certain delay volume settings only, but it sounds nice.

It is no dirt pedal. I think that's our first tour without a single dirt pedal!
