If you look at anything in terms of raw materials, nothing is worth the cost of what you pay. A guitar - even a high end model - is just a few bits of wood and metal, with the odd bit of plastic, cars are just metal boxes with a few rubber rings and so on... but none of us really gripe about the cost of those. I real terms, the work that's gone into the RE-2 and its big brother are reflected in the cost, plus the desirability factor and, no doubt, a decent profit margin for all concerned, plus, of course, the cost of the parts.
For sure, I absolutely agree with you, even coming from the opposite perspective - the cost of durable goods is amazingly cheap compared to food or energy. That you can buy anything like a guitar or pedal, at current prices, and keep them the rest of your life speaks to an incredible amount of value built into the supply chain. The RE-2 would cost 1 month of groceries in my house, and it would last, conservatively, 15 years, probably more like 30. That's incredible.

So maybe I should have said, the cost of pedals seems to have grown to be out of proportion to the rest of goods in the music industry. Maybe I just long for the days when a new Boss pedal could be an impulse payday buy - they were never so much as to give me pause. But at 20% of a mortgage payment, or equal to my car payment, I just don't feel that way anymore :D

However, on the basis of my first paragraph, maybe I can convince myself to get one - it's clearly great value compared to groceries :D

They really do seem like great pedals, its the kind of stuff we want from Boss. I bet they will end up being classics.

And if the second job was at a Timmie's, there'd be leftovers :D I need less expensive hobbies, that's the bottom line haha. Getting into guitars, jeeps, AND now amateur radio was just...dumb

Yeah, I hear you. Photography for me. WAY too many toys available for that. One good lens is the same as a high-end amp or guitar.

£199 at Andertons, preorder. Thomann say available end of April. Oh, do I ever want 'em both.

@ Laurie: I hear you; I only dabble in photography but the prices of stuff... ouchie!

I spend enough on music and art gear as it is. Any more and I'll be selling my wife and kids for medical experiments. Mind you...

Andertons in the UK are quoting £209 for the RE-2 and £339 for the RE-202.
Prices have fallen ever so slightly at Andertons now:

RE-2 - £199
RE-202 - £335

Edit: DOH! Just noticed SamXTherapy had posted the same thing on Sunday

Weird that resellers in Europe are announcing it for sooner than Ishibashi Music in Japan.

£192.99 at guitarguitar.co.uk, folks. Anyone with more expensive pre-orders elsewhere, hope you can either cancel or get a price-match deal.
