Toshiba TA7136P / P1 / AP

Post by Old_Iron » Fri Oct 15, 2021 1:41 pm

You all know that I like to collect pedal variants, and that I like the DS-1 very much...

And one thing that is not commented very often (never) about MIJ DS-1 is the "variants" of the Toshiba TA7136 chip.

TA7136P in a 7600 NOV 1978 DS-1:

TA7136P1 in a 8500 AUG 1979 DS-1:

TA7136AP in a 9600 JUL 1980 DS-1:

I understand that it is probably an evolution of the chip, little changes to improve energy consumption, lower signal to noise ratio, expand working temperature range, etc.

Nothing that would change it soundwise, I guess.

Could not find any datasheet from the early specimens, only from the late :

But found a picture from the equivalent circuit of the P1 version, and comparing it to the AP, as seen in the datasheet, there is a small difference:

TA7136P1

TA7136AP

Did you find it? 😉

It is a diode, right in the middle of the circuit picture of the P1 version, and it is absent in the AP.

No info about the earliest P version.

So, if any of you guys have an "antique" datasheet of the P or P1 "variants", or have some knowledge about those small differences, please share it here with us, it will be very much appreciated.

Information request sent to Toshiba Japan:

"Hello Toshiba,
I'm 54, and a Boss guitar pedal collector, with more than 200 units.
The Toshiba TA7136 integrated circuit is very much respected among vintage Boss pedal collectors.
And there was 3 variants of it used by Roland/Boss by the 70's and 80's: TA7136P, TA7136P1 and TA7136AP.
I'm here asking you gentlemen some information about the differences, even small ones, about those variants.
It is important to us collectors to acquire and share information about our praised collections.
Datasheets of the early "P" and "P1" variants will be very much appreciated, or any other information about them.
Here is a discussion in a Boss collectors forum that I started (I'm Old_Iron over there):
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=562&p=5024#p5024
And my Boss pedal collection:

Thank you very much in advance.
Best regards,
Danilo Carrazzone"

Hi

I have the data sheets for the TA7136AP if you are interested I can email it to you. The TA7136P is the same design but with lower specs (noise, gain, etc).

Best Regards

Thank you cctsim, but the datasheet for the "AP" version I have it, the other versions "P" and "P1" are the ones I am looking for.

I want to compare them to know exactly what are the differences and to understand if they are important to the sound of the pedal.

Probably not, but just in case.
