GT-001 erratic volume output

Hello,
My Boss GT-001 unit is experiencing a random output volume level during use. The volume jumps up substantially for 10-20 seconds then returns to the normal output volume. This is not patch-related as this happens regardless of the selected patch. The unit is almost unusable for live performances now. No pedals are in front of the unit, just an Ernie Ball MusicMan Luke III guitar. Please advise on possible causes and more importantly a permanent solution.
