Okay okay, nice slick little bit of advertising. Let us be a little more critical here.
I am not going through all these facts, that is why we have you people here. Just a few things I want to make you think about

Boss and Prince: Prince hit big time in the 1980s, What happened to compact pedals in the 1980s? Which brand kept going regardless? That is where Prince found his beloved Boss pedals. The DS-2 is used as a example. When did that one first emerge? There you have it!

No mention of the real invention Boss made: The Digital Delay, maybe no need to push this one because we all know how good it is and still going today!!

Old Iron,

Fantastic links man: I really love your first link: Like it how he passionately talks about the book and how he takes us through it. Most of us here will know most of what is shown in the first part of this book (wild guess..........) When he comes to the second section...Whow, that is where it gets really interesting. Who would not like to know what is behind these pedals and what was the inspiration behind some of those pedals.
Great stuff!! ;)

Have a question: You have such a impressive collections with lots of duplicates. What is your motivation behind all the SD-1's? Do you collect pedals from different years rather than their sound and design?
I myself am mainly interested in the sound and how this sound changed over time. With a lot of the Boss pedals the sound has not changed all that much, even when a different chip was used at some point. I know, this may be just my own observation. Find it fascinating to see you have quite a few SD-1's and DS-1's, but then, given the fact you are collecting by the year it, all makes sense.
Cheers!

Hey visserman.

Yeah, that video about the Boss book made me get hooked, look for and ultimately buy the book.

About my collection, I have two goals that I am trying to archive, to have all models and variants, and to have all silver screws from the first batch of production.

Variants to me means, MIJ or MIT, different name, knobs, circuitry (analog/digital), components, back plate label, thumb screws, etc.

Some are duplicates (12) and they became spares in two situations, either when I buy another in better condition or when I find another from the first batch, in case of the silver screws.

The rest that looks as spares are in fact variants of the model.

In the specific case of the SD-1, there are 2 spares, the others are variants, mostly chip and clipping diodes, but also capacitors and country of origin. To my ears they all sound slightly different to each other.

The same for the DS-1, small variations in the Toshiba chip and all 3 kind of diodes (yellow, black and blue stripes), but no duplicates here.

So it's not one of each year, but one of each model and all variations of that model.

I know, it's crazy.

Cheers.

Old Iron,

Those are ambitious goals eh? and no, it's not crazy as we all know here.

I was thinking about that book. Interesting to see that a lot of the facts we have learned here from each other was already available from one book. This book came out in the early 2000 just a few years before Bossarea was created in 2005. Truly amazing!! The serial decoder had not been detected yet, but this would not take too long....

Well, to have each model released, I'm getting close to it, if only the missing, recent released, ones weren't so expensive...

To have all silver screws from the first batch, only 3 are missing, PH-1, DS-1 and TW-1.

So, the all-variations-of-each-model goal is to keep the fun going on almost forever. Otherwise I would be bored waiting Boss release a new pedal to buy it. To me it wouldn't be collecting really.

Yes all variations of each model will keep you collecting forever.
I just had a look at the stomp box line-up and noticed the DS-2 is still being produced. Will that not have had some changes over all those years like the DS-1 has had? We do not hear much about it but really....

One thing that certainly changes from time to time is the back plate: New logos are added and older ones disappear.

Do you collect all the Waza's as well? The new TU3 W is the same as the TU3 is terms of functionality, only difference is the better quality buffer and the ability to switch it off.
I wish they just had improved some features on the Boss pedals instead of creating a whole new range and "pretend" that they are a premium range.

I have not produced a list yet of the pedals I have here. They are mainly the older ones and some of the newer ones, but not too many new ones since I am not too interested in them.
I see the Boss pedals as a stepping stone: They have always been there, and their overall basic sound is good. Onece you become interested in a particular effect you can find something of a better quality, and a more specific sound.

The unique thing with Boss pedals is they offer many functions in the same package. One example is, off course, the DD range. From the DD6 onwards, there are so many features in this delay pedal which are really useful. In a way they serve as a good entry ticket for someone to get to know how to work with some of those features. Once you really dig it, you can find yourself something of better standing.

Then we have some pedals which are timeless, and their sound is just classic. I feel the DS-1 is one of those pedals. It is not a general distortion sound. I can be tweaked and it works with almost any amp. When you listen to Kurt Cobain of Nirvana you can hear the DS-1 sound on nearly anything he plays. Okay it helps he often used Fender amps and also like to use power amps instead of a combo amp. The DS-1 blends in very well and whatever it may lack at times you can add that with a little EQ or a pre-amp pedal of some kind.

I am venturing out too much of the original tread? Maybe or maybe not? Just expressing more ideas about the pedals really instead of just hyping them.
Okay keep your ideas coming I would say!
Cheers
