Post 1971 Marshall cabs should have flat head #8 pozi screws. 1 3/4". Stainless looks better than regular galvanized, imo.

Its all good - I'm not doing a "restoration" so Phillips are fine. A full restoration would need a strip back and re-tolex of the main cabinet and it isn't worth it to me.

On the theme on a non-restoration, I also always replace the plastic handles with metal - no point putting in something that will break in the future. Hence the packing wood you can see against the inside of the handle holes - one of the screws in the metal handles sits above the cut-out for the plastic handle bulge. The packing wood gives the screw something to screw into.

PS: I have the only pozidriv screwdrivers that I've ever seen here in Calgary, Canada (they came from Australia with me 25 years ago). No one I've ever talked to here has heard of the term "pozidriv".

Fair enough. ;)

Yeah, I only heard about pozidriv through the Marshall forum. I got my pozi screwdriver through Amazon.ca.
I couldn't find one in stock locally through any of the big chain stores here in Toronto...

I changed out my Marshall cab's plastic handles for metal ones too. The old plastic ones were cracked, and buzzed at certain frequencies. I got them through Scumback. They fit perfectly and lined up with the stock screw holes.

Btw, my vote goes to Vintage Ampeg for the most unusual amp cabinet screws. They used the ultra-rare "clutch head" design!

I haven't heard of Pozidriv, either. But those are common screwdrivers here, simply labelled PZ2 and so on. It is a variation of the standard Phillips drive which is known as PH2 (and so on) in Germany. Ask a German craftsman if he can give you a screwdriver with a Phillips head and you will earn a puzzled look. Ask for a PH2 (or PZ2) screwdriver instead. ;)

Orange amp arrived today. Marshall logo yesterday.

The OR15 is excellent. Only one channel, but plenty of versatility.

Something unexpected... when cranked the OR15 sounds very similar to the DingoTone Fat Dingo Distortion (FDD).

Finished. The Duratex on the back looks just fine. Saved buying tolex and paying for shipping (I had the Duratex left over from when I did my sub cabinets).

The metal handles feel so much more sturdy.

A quick report on the Orange OR15.
  • It sounds "just like an Orange" - not a Tiny Terror, a real Orange.
  • Volume level is just fine for practice and recording. Mrs Laurie says it is "ear shattering" but it would need to be mic-ed in a loud band. Smaller/quieter band it would be fine.
  • Sounds awesome with the 4x12 Vintage 30 cab. Lots of bottom end.
  • Only one channel, but an overdrive pedal in the effects loop (say, an OD-32) gives a credible "boost channel".
  • It has a 120/240V switch, so it can be used in Australia when we get there without modification. :)
Overall I like it. Would a Rockverb 50 be better, yes for sure. But 4 times the price!
