Marshall 1960A cab... got an unbelievable deal

Post by laurie » Sat Apr 16, 2022 9:25 pm

Bought this cab at a local pawn store. VERY scruffy and dirty (the pic below is after a clean and gluing down the ripped tolex). No logos. Strange scratched-in markings on the jack-plate.

No idea what was inside, but USD$100 so I figured I couldn't go wrong. Even if a couple of the speakers were blown it was a good deal.

This was what was inside... all working perfectly. Whomever wired the cab had put the G12T-75 out-of-phase. The cab sounded "off" which is why it was dumped at the pawn store I think. The wiring looked like it had been done by someone who had never held a soldering iron. The wiring below is my re-wire.

Wow, great deal!

I'm too old to carry such things anymore, but I'm glad you're still a young chap.

I've got a full stack of Marshall 4x10s now. They sound great, and are easy to move around.
(They cost more than a hundred bucks though)

Awesome! I bet you can purchase a logo as a replacement somehow.

I bought a 4th Vintage 30 and installed it. Plus ordered a new jack plate and logo for the front. I'll also take to ratty tolex off the back and Duratex it.

Pics of updated cab to follow.

Not sure what to do with the G12T-75. Sell it, or build a cab for it as a single 12 ...

I decided to keep this cab and buy a head to drive it.

Thinking of getting an Orange OR15. Anyone have any experience with this amp?

Based on the YouTube videos and online reviews I bought a good used one. USD$500 online from a branch of the local music store one province over.

I'll let you know how it sounds when it comes!

Slowly getting the work done on the cab.

- Ordered and fitted a 4th Vintage 30.
- Ordered a new jack plate, Marshall logo, and "1960 Vintage" logo.
- Ordered new metal handles to replace the broken plastic ones. Ordered ultra low profile Phillips screws for the handles.
- Removed the tolex from the back and refinished with Duratex. Removing the tolex glue was a pain in the arse.
- Doweled the screw holes for the screws that hold the back on. Several had been stripped by heavy-handedness in the past.
- Ordered new Phillips drive screws to replace the Robertson drive (square drive) screws that someone had previously used (probably the heavy handed person above).

Indeed. Pozis are near impossible to get here. Standard where I come from.

Certainly the Robertson ones have to go.
