Recording Interfaces - suggestions?

So I have always used a Roland Edirol EA-20, simple and seems to work. But since I'd like to get some "pro" band recordings going I'm thinking whether I need to upgrade. For example, is there a higher quality of recording standard I should be using?

So what do you all use, why and any recommendations?

Many thanks!

Everybody seems to be moving to Universal Audio Apollo interfaces. Even studios that I've recorded at that have the VERY best gear seem to feel that the UA Apollo interfaces are the closest you'll get for the money. Even watching pro musicians and producers on Youtube, and you'll spot the UA Apollo pretty often.

As for me; I don't like the current sound and prefer to use an old Alesis USB Multimix as my interface. It can max out (distort) just right which is perfect for rock based music. Current gear is too "clean" for my taste.

How many inputs do you think you’ll need?

How many of those need mic pre-amps with powered XLR?

Will you be recording the band live or each part individually?

Will you be recording a drum kit with multiple mics?

What connection to PC/Mac USB/FireWire/Thunderbolt?

What’s your budget?

The UA Apollos are killer. I have a Twin Duo MKII. The plug ins are smokin', it sounds great and the processor in the interface allows your computer to focus on other jobs. I totally get why they are so popular. In this era of distance, the onboard processor helps keep latency down with virtual jams online, too. They also have a longer shelf life since they are well supported and updated.
