On the site where the base circuit came from (http://www.valvewizard.co.uk/engineersthumb2.html) the original designer landed on "ratio" and "level" as the two controls, so I'd put one of the "threshold" and "attack" controls inside. This would leave 8 knobs. Good grief!

The reason I'm kinda hung-up on evolving this particular design is the engineering of it - it will be ultra low noise, unlike any of the optical compressors or Dyna Comp clones.

"Ultra low noise" sounds very promising and that would be a reason why I should buy one. 8-)

I don't yet know if this is even feasible, but the initial thinking is something like this:

I like the look of this design.

That's looking pretty sweet Laurie!

Could you talk us through each function? (for a simple layman here!)

Without throwing a proverbial spanner in any works....is it possible to allow the two channels to have independent EQing, OR as a work-around a small switch to add the "bright" or "Treble" to one channel?

(Similar to the BOSS CS-1 or the Janglebox mod to a Dynacomp).

Of course each owners usuage will be different. For me I envisage leaving the comp always on, at a relatviely light setting to tame spikes and add a bit of sustain and zing), then hit say Channel B for more squish and perhaps more treble...sort of "instant 60s". (Of course we wouldnt want to lose volume either*, possibly boost).

Cheers :D

Knobs... all I see is knobs... so many knobs!

To meet those needs it would really have to be two complete compressors in one housing. That is starting to make things too complicated for the design and build. Somewhere between 12 and 16 knobs in a super large enclosure.

The design should have one simple compressor (without the A/B switching). And an external box can be made to enable two compressors to be setup to to be A and B. It sounds like a big rig (2 compressors and a switch box) but trying to do it all in one box would be too complicated and not much smaller.

And on the plus side, you would have two compressors that could be used for stereo, or in two separate rigs when you didn't need the A/B functionality.

Keeping it simple. Threshold, Attack and Release are trim-pots inside.

Leave both the compressors engaged. Disengaging/engaging the effect and selecting A or B is done in the external box.

The switch box could be used for any two effects... a pair of DS-1's with different settings? An overdrive and a distortion? Whatever you like...
