These are very unusual designs which I really like. They certainly aren’t your usual effects.
Indeed they are very unusual.
Doc, just a few more questions and remarks about your DOD family:
Sorry I did not notice your FX87 Edge one, did not know you had one as well. I see you even have the FX85, how does that one compare to the FX87?
What is the yellow one with the three knobs? The Classic Fuzz any good? I know you do have quite some Fuzz pedals so you may have an idea what this one sounds like.

What about the American Metal one? I just ask because DOD and the names............I have a Supra Distortion, and really this one can produce very convincing Fuzz sounds. Supra?
A have a friend who gave me a Metal Manic to use, and again, this one can give you good Fuzz tones as well, just keep dist. control down and it sounds more like a Fuzz. Anyway, all comments are welcome!
Cheers
Thanks for your questions visserman that I will do my best to answer. Firstly, here is a better photo of the pedals covered..

I’ll take an easy one to start with ! The yellow pedal with the three knobs is the FX50B Overdrive Plus. Fairly unremarkable Overdrive until you twist the Drive control into the Boost zone and then it behaves like a decent distortion. Nice bit of character to it.

The FX87 I have is the Psycho Acoustic Processor rather than the Edge version. I think it’s only a cosmetic difference. This pedal is an external presence control which boosts the higher frequencies. Not my cup of tea really - fizzes up driven sounds and makes cleans sound too brittle. However, the FX85 Harmonic Enhancer is excellent. You can very precisely dial in where in the frequency range you want the harmonics boosted. Very good for beefing up lead and crunch tones. I toe in the controls (Level at 3 o’clock and Presence at 9). I like this pedal and it certainly is more than a presence control !

The FX56 American Metal. Mmmm..I’ve never really got into this one. It’s a vaguely Mesa type high gain tone with a lot of bottom end - too much for me but would probably suit the 7 and 8 stringers. Nondescript really. I couldn’t get a decent fuzz sound out of it. However, the FX52 Classic Fuzz is a good one. It has the body I look for in a fuzz and cleans up nicely too. Not fizzy but does benefit from a bit of drive /gain from the amp. Really quiet pedal with very little background noise.

I enjoyed messing around with these pedals which don’t make many appearances on my rigs. I hope I’ve answered everything.

Doc, thanks for your reply, yes man, you answered it well.

I have the DOD FX50, and had a feeling your yellow pedal from the previous image was a updated version of that one. Did not have the time to check so hence my question.

The FX50 is a copy of MXR Dist.+ and it really sounds almost like it. I have not heard many copies which are soooo close. I will do a video at some point.

I agree with what you are saying about the FX87, The Edge also works a little like that. Sometimes I like it, other times not.
Interesting to see you like the FX85 over the FX87 since it is a older version.

Also good to hear that the Classic Fuzz sounds good to your ears, especially since you have far better fuzzes around.
Thanks again, yes I prefer to talk about the pedals rather than just showing them, but showing is good as well, I guess the images act as inspiration for the following discussion.

Here are a few Arion pedals. It’s a budget brand but the stereo pedals deliver an incredible spatial spread. They may not be the best sounding mod pedals but the stereo image they produce fills the room when I run them through a Roland Jazz Chorus amp in stereo. Worth trying if you ever see one.

Very nice collection. I had the SCH-1 Chorus and the Stereo Flanger and they were both good work horses.

Here’s another little collection which probably won’t grow much further. Yamaha. There are some good ones here.

Doc some more questions, the Dist. does it sound like the DS1?
The overdrive like a OD1?
So many of those early pedal were copies of some sort, just wondering how close they are.
Thanks!

Again Doc, if you would not know, the plastic casing would put you off, but really. I the dist. close to a DS1, and the overdrive, similar like a OD-1?

Thanks for the questions visserman. :)

I don’t think they sound like the Boss pedals you mention. The thing I like about the OD-1 and DS-1 is that they are a bit raw around the edges and dirty up the guitar and amp’s natural tone without losing it altogether.

These Yamaha pedals, whilst having a very useful tone, sound way more processed to me. It’s as if they are responsible for creating 90% of the tone, whereas the Boss pedals create say, 50% of of the tone, if you get what I mean.

More good questions and thanks visserman.

Firstly, the casings. I was going to mention this in my previous comment because I don’t think these Arion units would stand up very well on the road on a pedal board. They would be ok in a rack off the floor but I think constant heavy stomping would soon mess them up. The battery cover would definitely get mislaid too. It was the stereo outputs in the mod pedals that seduced me into them !

Secondly, as with the Yamahas, I wouldn’t say these sound like the Boss pedals. Again, they have a use but do sound heavily processed. It does get interesting when one of the dirt pedals is stacked with a high quality drive though, say, like a Fulltone OCD.

Thanks Doc! Interesting observation about the Boss pedals creating 50 per cent of your tone.
Have not tried any of those Yamaha or Arion pedals.

Sansamp / Tech 21 pedals. I often use one of these with my Roland JC-40 amp for drive & distorted sounds. Also useful to place after another overdrive, distortion or fuzz to beef it up with that amp.

The GT-2 has bailed me out at small gigs a couple of times when my amp has packed up. They are quality units.
