Our dear fuzzbuzzfuzz bought a mint in box Maxon OD-02 for me! Image

Well, it turned out that the OD-02 has nothing in common with the Tube Screamer, although the effectsdatabase put this pedal and the TS10 in relation to each other. It sounds differently. And a look under its hood revealed that there is no 4558 chip inside, but six SIP ICs, mainly Mitsubishi chips instead and no diodes apart from a protection zener.

I was led on the wrong track, but I bet it turns out to be a great pedal nonetheless. It will take a while until I can hold the pedal in my hands, though.

Never had one of those, I just know that in the past 30 years I have encountered at least 100 broken Ibanez 10 and L Series pedals but 0 broken similar era Maxon pedals.
This confirms my thoughts about the build quality.

The demand for the 10 series stuff and subsequent decline in demand for the 9 series stuff puzzles me to no end.
Me too! The 10-series pedals aren't bad at all (well, the CP10 came with an implemented seashore sound), but they aren't top notch. And not really sturdy. That's why I was eager to see if the OD-02 could be THE sleeper pedal all the years.

Are fuzzbuzzfuzz or zentropa able to shed some light on the Maxon OD-02 topic?

I don't know what the 10s use, but the Achille's heel of the Ibanez 8/9 pedals is that darn switch/spring mechanism. No matter what, I just count on them getting janky or going out. Replacing the switch is a lot more involved than a BOSS switch fix, which happens rarely. A BOSS switch replacement takes 10-15 minutes, the rebuild Laurie posted here probably 30. It takes 30-45 minutes to get to the Ibanez switch, remove it, solder in the new one, stretch out the spring a little, put it back together, hope it works great.

I too am perplexed by the demand of 10 series and the drop in 9 series.

With being in the right location, I have over the years been lucky enough to have sampled a fair few of the Maxon "01"/"02" series.

Pepe is certainly right with the build quality remarks. In general, the weighty heft is the same as the earlier 9 series, just the switch is revised and the lines squared off of the casing. about 50% more weight than a compact BOSS pedal.

The weight tended to put me off picking them up initially and much like the Ibanez Power and Master series the number of models is quite overwhelming - though I believe they do diverge and, in many instances, have no equivalents between the two brands.

Some fly under the radar, unlike the Ibanez equivalents. The Modulation Delay is a shining example with its green/blue Ibanez brothers being sought after, in three versions.)

Here is Effects Database list, Bold being those I have kept. I was gutted to see a Spectrum slip through my hands a while back - that's as hard to find as the BOSS. I regret selling the wonderfully named "Rock n' Roll" a while back too. I also had the delays at one time which have the very nice feature of very clearly marked delay time modes/notches.

Although this is the database list I personally would separate into the 01s and 02s. I don't think they were all concurrent.
  • Maxon AD-01 Analog Delay
    Maxon AF-01 Auto Filter
    Maxon BC-01 Bi-Mode Chorus
    Maxon BD-01 Bass Driver
    Maxon BD-02 Bass Driver
    Maxon BDC-01 Digital Bass Chorus
    Maxon BE-01 Bass EQ
    Maxon BF-01 Bass Flanger
    Maxon BP-01 Bass Compressor
    Maxon CP-01 Compressor
    Maxon CS-01 Chorus
    Maxon DC-01 Digital Chorus
    Maxon DD-01 Digital Delay
    Maxon DD-02 Digital Delay
    Maxon DE-01 Digital Echo
    Maxon DM-01 Multimode Delay
    Maxon FL-01 Flanger
    Maxon GE-01 Graphic EQ
    Maxon JD-01 Jet Driver
    Maxon MS-01 Master Switch
    Maxon MS-02 Master Switch
    Maxon NG-01 Noise Gate
    Maxon OD-01 The Driver
    Maxon OD-02 Overdrive
    Maxon OR-01 Rock'n Roll
    Maxon PT-01 Phaser
    Maxon SD-01 Sonic Distortion
    Maxon SM-01 Super Metal
    Maxon SP-01 Spectrum/D
    Maxon ST-01 Super Tube Screamer
As a final thought, my other mild gripe of the Ibanez, and to a much lesser degree with the "01" series, is there's something in the buffering that I can hear. A hi-fi nature perhaps? A thin-ness, a bit "plastic-y" nature. The TS-10 is a prime example, and I'd swear I can close my eyes and hear the difference with the 09s etc. I've not studied the circuitry, but something related to switching buffering I suspect.

Overall, a pleasing and occasionally mysterious range, I may dip into a few more, prices are on the rise here in Japan (for everything).

P.S I did send the PT-01 in a tour once upon a time. Nice pedal - a PT-9 of later years.
