The ring/tip was indeed the issue. For these pedals to work with pretty much anything other than a BOSS pedal you will need a tip/ring crossover cable.

yes... got around to making a cable tonight... swapped the tip and ring... wahla! Can't believe nobody makes those cables. Time for some cable making action...

really? that is for volume, has no effect whatsoever on expression... these pedals suck as expression pedals apparently... question not answered... is the issue impedance? non-linear taper? I tried two different FV500H on several pedals all with same result... not a happy camper...
