Re: When did DS-2 go to all silicon diodes?

Ah yes, google. If I didn't have an advanced electrical engineering degree this type of sloppy description from the internet likely wouldn't annoy me anywhere near as much :? The "sloppy description from the internet" presented by google came from the Wikipédia page that you linked. https://en.wiki...

Re: When did DS-2 go to all silicon diodes?

With sincere apologies for not letting go of this subject... this is not the right description of a transistor. A diode is like a non-return valve. Current will flow "unimpeded" in one direction, and not at all in the other. A BJT is like a faucet - the amount of current flowing between Collector a...

Re: When did DS-2 go to all silicon diodes?

A transistor isn't actually "two diodes". It is a separate type of device entirely. It is possible to use a transistor base-emitter junction to emulate a diode, but it isn't a very good one. bigtone23 was talking about "Ge transistors in fuzz pedals", I should had being more specific , but I learne...

Re: SD-1 diode swapping.

I did the Waldo thing, and I think you're right. The only difference is the larger diode at the bottom right of the B board. (Assuming the values of the other components didn't change) Are the transistors the same? I can't make out the numbers clearly. I also noticed that our B boards have the same...

Re: Boss PH-1, a theory. WRONG !!!

Oh man, sorry to hear that! :x People like that spoil the fun for others. I'm not a collector, but I feel your pain, man! Sorry to hear you missed out on that elusive PH-1, Old Iron. Don't let that ruin your enjoyment of the (amazing) collection you have built up though. I've been there. Had 300+ p...

Re: Boss PH-1, a theory. WRONG !!!

Unfortunately it is true, I found one for sale (auction) in japan last week, I asked a seller I know there for years to buy it for me, he said okay, he bought many of my rare pedals in auctions like that before, I always pay him a good commission. I was watching the PH-1 auction live and it sold for...

Re: Boss PH-1, a theory. WRONG !!!

The theory is wrong.

After more than 10 years searching for a 6400 PH-1, I saw one.

So, it is extremely rare but they do exist.

Sorry, I was wrong...Again. :(

Re: When did DS-2 go to all silicon diodes?

This is interesting, and also supporting of my loose theory: most BOSS pedals don't sound radically different after going through a revision. The engineers do seem to design the pedal to maintain it's fundamental tone and function, regardless of the component changes. In my limited experience, my 1...

Re: When did DS-2 go to all silicon diodes?

Complementing... The reason that the diode swap is not so noticeable is probably due to the numerous gain stages in it's dense circuit. In a more simple circuit, like the OD-1, DS-1, etc., the clipping diodes rules the shape of the wave and therefore it is more heard at the end. But, you know what, ...

Re: When did DS-2 go to all silicon diodes?

Would mine be the all silicon diode version? Yes, one of mine is a MIT 1999 May and it is a silicon diode unit. Did the earlier versions use the germanium diodes in the regular mode or the Turbo mode? Both, the turbo mode II is a circuit addition to the mode I, so the clipping of the Ge diodes is a...
